The Place Are you a fan of original Flock Cafe at Tiong Bahru estate? By the same group of people, I found out lately that Flock Cafe has officially opened its second outpost at Ghim Moh since the start of the year, within walking distance to Holland Village and Buona Vista MRT stations. I always find modern cafes within old estates charming, which explains why it is relatively easy for me to fall in love with the Ghim Moh branch even without trying the food. The cafe is not huge, which can probably accommodate less than thirty people at one go. I like the simplistic and somewhat minimalist look to the cafe, think wooden tables and Peranakan inspired floor tiles, and a gigantic chock board which showcases the full menu at Flock Cafe.

Flock cafe in the midst of many in Tiong Bahru. With both indoor and outdoor seating, this place is usually full with both locals and expats especially on weekends. Personally, I was not overly impressed with their breakfast poached eggs, though I did frequent here for coffee and their lunch specials (most often chicken katsu over rice) which was delicious. Aside from the lunch specials the prices aren't cheap but no brunch cafe in Tiong Bahru really is, plus the atmosphere and the friendly staff are well worth it. This isn't my go-to brunch place but will definitely come back here again!

I was glad we went for this because it had such a moist and dense texture that reminded me of a kueh lapis with a strong cinnamon scent. I love! The cream cheese frosting on top was really cheesy and overall, it wasn’t very sweet or cloying. I could easily have a second slice myself.

The brioche which was thick and fluffy was thoroughly soaked in egg mixture and then pan fried in butter to a lovely golden brown. The buttery fragrance was intoxicating. I loved the somewhat crispy crust on the outside and that softness and pillowy-ness on the inside. Dunking it into maple syrup was just heavenly. The banana was sliced length-wise before pan-frying and that also brought out its sweetness even more.
My only gripe was that the bacon that was supposed to be crispy wasn’t crispy at all but nonetheless, it was still good because it gave a contrasting salty flavour to this otherwise sweet fare.

Flock Cafe is a family-run cafe nestled in a quiet side of Tiong Bahru that one can easily miss out on unless you’re going for the mee pok at Hua Bee (or Bincho yakitori restaurant by night) which is just next door. A modern outfit with a touch of industrial chic – natural wood & metal combined with concrete flooring – it’s a lovely minimal style. The atmosphere here was social yet laid-back.
Perfect setting to sip some coffee (their coffee beans are from Liberty Coffee) and unwind with a book.

The Food For a small cafe, I am surprised by the variety offered in the menu. Not too overwhelming in terms of choices, but there is bound to be something to everyone’s liking. Choose from the All-Day breakfast, Meats & Fish, Pastas and Bar Bites sections. Beverages wise,
the cafe has recently obtained its alcohol license so there are a few ciders and beers for now (and probably more brands to come). I am still a coffee person when it comes to cafe so I was already firmed on having my dose of caffeine.
